RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
