The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
